Tertiary follicles in heifers treated with melengestrol acetate

Nine cycling Slovakian Pied heifers, aged 20-24 mth, were each given 0.1 mg MGA daily for 14 days, and groups of 3 females were slaughtered on days 14, 20 and 23 after the onset of treatment. Three females were treated with MGA for 7 days before slaughter, and 3 females were untreated and served as controls. The number of atretic follicles in the ovary increased during MGA treatment, and after withdrawl there was an increased number of normal tertiary follicles. From this and other results, it is suggested that MGA may affect the feedback regulation of both cyclic and basal secretions of gonadotropins.
