Among rural Africans in South Africa malutrition and infection were the two main groups of disorder. Urban Africans were in transition; malnutrition and infection were still present though their incidence was falling. New disorders included many related to alcohol drinking, and "western" disorders such as obesity and hypertension reached epidemic proportions and may exceed those among whites. Uncommon disorders included coronary heart disorder, gout, gallstones and colonic cancer. Epidemiological research was needed.
