In intact germinating seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Limburg, ethylene production started to increase after 21 ( plus or minus 1)h; max. amounts (1550 pl/h seed) were reached at 64 ( plus or minus 1)h. Where the seed coat was removed after 12 h of imbibition, ethylene production began to increase after 15 ( plus or minus 1)h and reached a max. of 3300 pl/h seed after 27( plus or minus 1)h. After 4 days the decoated seeds were producing 300 pl ethylene/h seed and were better developed (170 mg/embryo) than intact seeds (420 pl/h seed, 80 mg/embryo). Development of the embryo was closely related to the time of ethylene production.
