Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) , lactose low formula in malnourished children with steatorrhoea and diarrhoea

A medium chain triglyceride (MCT), low-lactose containing milk formula (Capricid, Nutricia, Holland) was used successfully in the treatment of 20 children with protein calorie malnutrition, diarrhoea and steatorrhoea; 18 of the children also had associated infections. 75% gave good to excellent results for improved fat absorption and a decrease in steatorrhoea, 80% for increased body wt., and 85% for cessation of the diarrhoea. These figures were much higher than those for a control group not receiving the MCT formula.
