Hemoglobin values: comparative survey of the 1976 Canadian Olympic team

The mean ( plus or minus s.d.) Hb concentrations in the blood of 123 male and 64 female Canadian Olympic athletes of 1976 were, respectively, 14.7 plus or minus 1.0 and 12.9 plus or minus 0.7 g/100 ml. Corresponding figures for the general population of Canada in 1975 and of Australian and Dutch Olympic athletes of 1968 were, in that order: 15.5 plus or minus 1.8 (n = 1000), 13.6 plus or minus 1.6 (n = 1000); 16.2 plus or minus 0.8 (n = 36), 15.5 plus or minus 0.3 (n = 6); 15.5 plus or minus 1.0 (n = 134), 14.4 plus or minus 0.8 (n = 39). The Canadian athletes had significantly lower values than the other 3 groups.
