Herpesviruses serologically indistinguishable from the DN 599 strain of bovine herpesvirus were isolated from two separate outbreaks of mammary pustular dermatitis in lactating Holstein-Friesian cows in Iowa and North Dakota respectively. Isolates were identified by immuno-electron microscopy and indirect fluorescent antibody tests. This bovine herpesvirus had previously been associated only with respiratory diseases of cattle. A possible human health hazard was indicated in one of the outbreaks.
