Urachal remnant in the cat: occurrence and relationship to the feline urological syndrome

The embryology, anatomy and possible pathophysiology are described. A survey of 735 anatomical specimens revealed a remnant of the urachus in 22% of males and 26.5% of females. Surgical correction by excising any attachment between the vertex of the bladder and the umbilicus, so that the bladder could lie in its normal position, was carried out on 33 males and 16 females with the urological syndrome, after the episode had subsided. Results of this were compared with cases not surgically treated. Mortality and recurrence in the treated group was much less. Urachal remnant is felt to be a predisposing factor for feline urological syndrome and in some cases a primary cause.
