A possible reaction to pseudoephedrine in a patient with phenylketonuria

Pseudoephedrine is a widely prescribed decongestant that is marketed alone or in combination with antihistamines in many over-the-counter cold preparations. Side effects include insomnia and agitation. A severe reaction to pseudoephedrine in a 10-mo. old infant with phenylketonuria is reported. The reaction may have resulted from an interaction of the patient's metabolic disease and the drug.
