The effect of treatment with anti-.beta.2-microglobulin sera on the survival of heart allografts transplanted between 2 isogenous inbred rat strains was studied. Hearts from male Wistar-Furth (WF) rats (Ag-B2) were grafted heterotopically into the peritoneal cavity of male 250-300 g animals of the Brown Norway (BN) strain (Ag-B3). A goat anti-rabbit .beta.2-microglobulin caused a significant but moderate prolongation of the survival of rat heart allografts. The prolongation may be partly attributable to interference with T [thymus-derived] lymphocyte functions.
