External structure of the iliohypogastric nerve in the postfetal life of man

The observations were carried out on both sides of 60 corpses of persons age 1 day to 90 yr. The derivation of the fibers, the number of the roots and the way of emergence of the iliohypogastric nerve were studied. The iliohypogastric nerve arose as a rule from the lumbar plexus, exceptionally from the ventral branch of L1 not taking part in the plexus. It was formed usually from 1 root, rarely from 2 roots. The iliohypogastric nerve more often emerged independently from the plexus, less often by a common trunk with the ilioinguinal nerve. The common trunk was long when conducting only spinal fibers from L1, but was short when also conducting fibers from Th12. The iliohypogastric nerve always conducted fibers from L1 and in 17.5% of cases also from Th12. The participation of fibers from Th12 was observed more often on the right side than on the left side, and more often in females than in males. The external structure of the iliohypogastric nerve, its course and branches were not related to age, height or body weight of the corpses.
