Allergy to dermatophytes and penicillin

Serological studies were made on 86 patients with mycoses of the feet and 20 patients with allergy to penicillin. In both groups sensitizing antibodies were found in parallel to fungal antigens and to penicillin, suggesting the occurrence of common antigenic structures in fungal allergens and penicillin. Positive anaphylaxis in guinea pigs sensitized by a Trichophyton interdigitale vaccine indirectly confirmed the presence of common antigenic determinants in fungal preparations and penicillin. A possible role of mycotic sensitization in increased sensitivity is suggested.
