The interaction of K-thiazolidinedione-2,4 with bis-.beta.-chlorethylether leads to .beta.,.beta.'-bis-(thiazolidindione-2,4-yl-3)-diethyl-ether which condenses with oxocompounds to give 5-mono- or 5,5'-2-substituted derivatives, many of which inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. Oxocompounds react with .beta.,.beta.'-bis-(thiazolidine-2,4-yl-3)-diethylether in acetic acid to form monoderivatives; analogous condensation in dioxane in the presence of piperidine leads mostly to 5,5'-bisderivatives.
