Concurrently circulating hepatitis B surface antigen and heterotypic anti-HBs antibody

The paradoxical combination of HBsAg [hepatitis B surface antigen] involving the d/y system of determinants with heterotypic anti-HBs seems to be a relatively rare phenomenon, at any rate in this part of the world [USA]. The present paper describes this phenomenon in 3 out of a consecutive series of 140 volunteer blood donors who were positive for HBsAg. Nevertheless, its existence may constitute one possible reason for using polytypic HBsAg vaccines in any projected immunoprophylaxis of HBV [HB virus] infection.
