The various biochemical effects of furocoumarin compounds are studied in a wide variety of organisms. The enhancement effects of radiation with regards to furocoumarin mutagenicity is considered in terms of variables (temperature effects, pH, dose and concentration, etc.) which affect the extent of cellular damage. DNA synthesis inhibition and the pharmacological aspects of these compounds are linked to metabolic alterations and the possible carcinogenic and teratogenic effects. Their genetic hazards to man are discussed and action mechanisms for damage repair considered.
