Nephritis associated with acute malaria is suspected to be an immunologic disease; however, the responsible antigens have not been identified so far. Study of the material extracted from malarious kidneys indicated the presence of globulin associated antigen that was not detected in normal chicken kidneys. Various immunological tests indicated that the kidney antigen extracted was essentially a serum antigen found in the plasma of malarious chicken which coated the infected erythrocytes (leached antigen). Fluorescent antibody studies with conjugated antiserum antigen of plasmodial (ASA) and babesial (ABr) origin and anti-7S chicken globulin showed 'lumpy-bumpy' type of fluorescence in malarious kidneys indicating involvement of immune complexes. Immunofluorescence with anti-parasite antigen (APA) conjugate differed in that the activity was localized to the glomerular tuft and did not extravasate into the renal tissues. It was suggested that fluorescein-iso-thiocyanate conjugated antibody to serum antigen or to its purified component SAI, may be useful in the diagnosis of malaria in renal biopsy specimens.
