A test meal of 500 ml with 10 g citrus pectin, 17.5 g sucrose, 100 mg phenol red without or with glycine, L- or DL-lysine, L- or DL-tryptophan, DL-methionine or L-glutamic acid was given by chronic gastric cannula to 4 male Large White X Landrace pigs weighing initially 15.0 to 15.5 kg and was recovered 20 min later. Glycine 26.7 to 106.8 mmol/litre did not affect gastric emptying, although with the highest concentration emptying seemed to slow down. Rate of emptying was not affected by L-lysine 41.0, DL-methionine 40.3 or L-tryptophan 29.4 mmol/litre; Cl- and H+ secreted were more when L-tryptophan was present than with the basal diet alone. There was no difference in rate of gastric emptying or secretion after the addition of essential L-lysine and DL-methionine and of nonessential glycine and L-glutamic acid. The L and DL isomers of lysine and tryptophan did not differ in their effects on gastric emptying and secretion.
