Beta blockers and myocardial metabolism in normal subjects and patients with angina pectoris

In 4 anginous patients, the preventive effect of the .beta.-adrenergic block, induced by means of venous infusion of propranolol, was examined on development of a myocardial metabolism of the anaerobic pacing-dependent type. The comparable investigation was extended to 4 patients in whom no clinical or instrumental pathognomonic elements of ischemic heart disease could be observed. The inefficacy of propranolol in impeding the critical increase in the pacing-dependent myocardial O2 consumption was shown.
