An examination of pollen by light microscopy and microspectrophotometry indicated that trinuclear pollen grains preponderate in clones of Populus nigra var. 'italica', P. yunnanensis, P. deltoides var. angulata and P. alba var. bolleana. It is suggested that such pollen is more widespread than has previously been assumed, and that its occurrence, together with other known characteristics of Poplar pollen, point to a sporophytic type of incompatibility (a conclusion of importance to Poplar breeding).
