Immune complexes in chronic hepatitis

Rheumatoid factors were present in 33.2%, cryoglobulins in 47.6%, and the anticomplementary assay was positive in 34.2% of cases with chronic active hepatitis. No statistically significant loss of total complement was observed, but its components, especially C1 and C3, exhibited lowered titers in 48.6% and 45.7% respectively of 160 cases. The origin, significance and pathogenicity of these factors are discussed in connection with the presence and possible role of the immune complexes in the development of chronic liver injury.
