Well nourished infants 1-24 months old, 60 without and 60 with diarrhoea, were tested for secondary carbohydrate intolerance by giving them initially half-strength milk (10 kcal/oz [1 fl oz = c. 30 ml]). Of the severely dehydrated 50% and of those with mild diarrhoea 16.6% showed signs of secondary carbohydrate intolerance. While multiple disaccharide intolerance and secondary unspecific monosaccharide intolerance were found in children with significant dehydration, only lactose intolerance was found in children with significant dehydration, only lactose intolerance was found in those with mild diarrhoea. There was no significant difference in the recovery pattern between patients with mild and severe diarrhoea.
