Adriamycin, used as a single agent, has limited usefulness in therapy for advanced previously treated lung cancer. The overall response rate of 8% is less than 1/2 of that reported for previously untreated patients (18%). Moderate to severe toxicity was also more pronounced in this group 35%) compared to previously untreated patients. Adriamycin should be considered in therapy for advanced small cell carcinoma of the lung. Five of 22 (23%) patients in this group responded. Their survival time was more than twice that of the overall treatment populaiton (25.7 vs. 11.6 wk) and their subjective quality of life was higher.
