Renal tumours--a review of 54 cases

Fifty-four cases of renal tumors were seen from Aug. 1968-Feb. 1975. Thirty-five were Wilms' tumor and 19 were renal cell carcinoma. Wilms' tumor constituted 14.6% of all tumors in the pediatric age group, whereas renal cell carcinoma comprised 0.32% of all tumors in adults. Aggressive treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy is needed for the management of Wilms' tumor. Renal cell carcinoma is a surgical problem, but radiotherapy has definite role in management when the disease is beyond renal confinement. Role of hormones in the management of renal tumors needs further study before a final comment is made. Immediate treatment results are documented in both groups. The results are far from satisfactory as compared to western figures which may be explained on the basis of advanced stages of the disease in these patients and inadequacy of the treatment program, especially for Wilms' tumors.
