Hyperkalemia: diagnosis and treatment

Differential diagnosis of clinical hyperkalaemia is considered. The clinical signs and symptoms of patients with hyperkalaemia are manifold and can involve many organ systems. In nonoliguric chronic renal failure with low blood renin and aldosterone an important problem may be recurrent hyperkalaemia. Treatment includes Ca salts, NaHCO3, removal of K with resin or dialysis and a transvenous pacemaker in anticipation of bradyarrhythmias or asystole.
