Acute radiation injury caused by faulty X-ray fluroscopy during cardiac procedures

Two cases of acute radiation burn caused by faulty X-ray fluoroscopic procedures during pacemaker insertion and cardiac catheterization were reported from a major medical institution in India. The skin doses received by the patients in the 2 cases are estimated. The X-ray equipment parameters and the work practices resulting in these injuries are analyzed in light of the recent recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
