Twenty patients with obstructive jaundice due to choledocholithiasis or malignant disease were studied before and after surgery. The basal and maximal acid outputs were lower in patients with obstructive jaundice than in control subjects. There was a significant rise in acid output after surgical relief of the jaundice. The possibility that reflux bile stimulates gastric acid secretory activity and that its absence in obstructive jaundice retards gastric acid secretion was discussed.
