Research on the population ecology of parasites (for example, pests of farm animals) is an essential prerequisite for the development of the approach that stresses population regulation rather than population control, whether by chemical or other means. The problems encountered in such investigations are briefly reviewed. Ways in which such studies might be pursued and the practical value of the results obtained are discussed with reference to work in the USSR on warble flies, especially Hypoderma bovis (L.) and H. lineatum (Vill.) infesting cattle and Oedemagena tarandi (L.) infesting reindeer.
