Genetic polymorphism of human serum factor B (Bf) which has been thus far not reported in Japanese was investigated by immunofixation electrophoresis in starch gel. Sera from 360 healthy Japanese living in Nara prefecture were examined and 3 common phenotypes were observed which corresponded to SS, FS and FF type, while rare variants were not detected. The gene frequencies of BfS and BfF are estimated at 0.824 and 0.176, respectively. The rare alleles may be virtually absent in Japanese population. Hemolytic assay revealed that the components of B protein were not only antigenically but also enzymatically identical as a precursor protein of C3 activator in the alternative pathway of complement activation.
