Research on the innervation of the testis

The testicles of 20 rats were removed and immediately prepared for microhistologic study by 2 different procedures; in one, lyophilized sections were reacted with paraformaldehyde vapors to form a specific fluorochrome with catecholamines, for examination by fluorescent microscopy. In the other procedure, frozen sections were incubated with acetyl thiocholine to demonstrate cholinesterase activity. By this method, the presence of adrenergic nerve plexuses were shown in arterial walls. Interstitial adrenergic fibers were found in both young and old rats. No acetylcholinesterase activity was found. There are 2 systems of fibers for adrenergic innervation. Neural activity may cause a change in the tissue microenvironment of steroid hormones or the liberation of a chemical mediator might act at the plasma membrane of endocrine elements and so promote the action of pituitary gonadotropins in regulating neural activity.
