Esophageal achalasia, a neuromuscular disorder with abnormal motility and failure of relaxation of the distal esophagus, unusual in childhood and is quite rare under the age of 1 yr. The case of 3 mo. old child with esophageal achalasia treated with a Heller esophagomyotomy was illustrated. Seven previously documented cases of achalasia in children under the age of 1 yr were reviewed and the difficulties of diagnosing this lesion in childhood were discussed.
