Effects of drugs influencing serotonergic mechanisms on behaviour of insects

The effects of some drugs affecting brain serotonergic mechanism on the behavior of cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) and ant lions (Myrmeleon formicarius) larvae were studied. The effects of p-chlorophenylalanine, LSD-25 and 5-HTP [5-hydroxytryptophan] on simple learning mechanisms in cockroaches and on behavior of ant lions (building the funnel-shape traps) were studied. Both p-chlorophenylalanine and LSD-25 facilitated behavior of insects while 5-HTP delayed responses. Serotonin may play an inhibitory role upon behavioral processes in some invertebrates.
