The composition of cellular samples from patients with invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix was studied. The relation of malignant cells to nonmalignant cells, the number of well-preserved vs. degenerated cells, the relative amount of cell degeneration in relation to the site of smear preparation and the relative amount of nonepithelial elements and the number of isolated cells vs. cells in clusters were considered. Among the 25 patients with invasive carcinoma there was 1 individual whose cervical smear contained no invasive carcinoma cells at all, and in 1 case the ectocervical sample consisted of invasive carcinoma cells exclusively. It appeared that there was a relationship between the proportion of carcinoma cells found in the ectocervical sample and the age of the patient.
