128 heifer calves (aged more than or equal to 6 months) and heifers were treated between the end of June and middle of July 1974 by (mostly single) intracisternal instillation of 1000 mg oxacillin as (i) Stapenor Retard (Bayer, Leverkusen, German Federal Republic) or 500 mg cloxacillin as (ii) Gelstaph TS (Beecham, UK); and 713 heifer calves and heifers were similarly treated in 1975. No mastitis appeared among the 1974 animals; 5 cases of mastitis (0.7%; 0.5% of those treated with (i) and 0.8% of those treated with (ii)) appeared among those treated in 1975 vs. 12.5% cases of summer mastitis in 2000 untreated contemporaries. It is pointed out that the procedure used is costly and labour-consuming; and that there may be objections to prophylactic use of antibiotics.
