The patient discussed in this report had congenital absence of pain sensation, impaired temperature perception, hypohidrosis and mental retardation. These functional abnormalities occurred in the presence of intact dermal nerve endings, normal sweat glands and myelinated sensory nerve. There was no evidence, from the studies carried out, of overt autonomic imbalance.
