The action of tyramine on the hypertensive responses induced by sympathetic stimulation in the pithed rat

The in vivo mechanism of noradrenaline release by nerve stimulation and tyramine was studied as an indirect index of the hypertensive responses elicited in the pithed rat preparation. The decline observed in the time-course of pressor responses induced by electrical stimulation was not accompanied by a reduction of hypertensive responses evoked by noradrenaline administration, and in addition was prevented by tyramine. There probably is a presynaptic inhibition of neurotransmitter release secondary to sympathetic nerve stimulation and tyramine possibly acts by interfering with this modulatory mechanism.
