Therapeutic strategies for the treatment of partial epilepsy

The first step in the treatment of epilepsy is making the correct syndromic diagnosis and splitting patients into the two major groups according to the 1989 ILAE classification, i.e., partial or generalized epilepsy. Partial epilepsy is the most frequent type in adults, and the majority of these are satisfactorily controlled with specific antiepileptic drugs (AED) under monotherapy. When we examine the failure of medical treatment, partial epilepsy presents the highest rate of refractory patients. Up to 35% to 40% of the patients in some studies were found to have recurrent seizures, and therefore considered as having refractory epilepsy requiring the use of AED under politherapy.
