An interpretation formula determining the effect of temperature on the rate of fixation of atmospheric molecular N is suggested. Utilization of the Van't Hoff temperature coefficient, accounting for the average monthly and average yearly temperatures, permitted calculation of the activity (process) of nonsymbiotic nitrogen-fixation in soil studied earlier by the mass-spectrometric method, using 15N and with incubation of soil samples at a temperature of 28.degree. C. In the main soil types of the Ukrainian SSR [USSR], an increase in the N content due to the activity of free-living nitrogen-fixators was, in most experimental variants, 1-3 kg/mo. per ha of arable layer, reaching 3.36-5.37 kg in soil without plants and 4.38-6.24 kg in the rhizosphere of winter wheat.
