Cystic teratoma of ovary associated with schistosomiasis

A 22-year-old female Bantu African from north Tanzania was found to have a large cyst measuring about 12 cm X 12 cm arising from the right ovary. Within the underlying tissue were numerous ova of Schistosoma haematobium but no adult worms were demonstrable. It is possible that the increased vascularity of the tumour may have played a role in the infestation of the cystic teratoma. The persistence of the lesion would lead to greater risk of complications.
