The use of high calcium dialysate in the treatment of renal osteomalacia

Four chronic haemodialysis patients with osteomalacia were treated by increasing the CA concentration of their dialysate from 1.40 to 2.15 mmol/litre. Only 1 of the patients showed improvement and it was concluded that high-Ca dialysis is not an effective treatment for renal osteomalacia. In the 3 patients who did not respond to Ca, symptoms were relieved in 3 to 6 weeks by vitamin D.
