A review is given of studies of the distribution and economic impact of parasitic tropical diseases, systems of control measures, immunodiagnosis and immunoprophylaxis, the role of Soviet scientific technicians in resolution of the problem and theoretical and experimental studies. Over half of the 2 billion people living in the tropical zone are affected. The major diseases are ancylostomiasis (450 million patients), filariasis (250 million), schistosomiasis (200 million), malaria (150 million), Chagas' disease (7 million), dracunculiasis, amoebiasis, leishmaniasis, leprosy and trypanosomiasis. Activities of the WHO in these categories are noted.
