Heart rate in 50 patients during the 1st week following acute myocardial infarct

The heart rate in 50 patients with acute myocardial infarction was evaluated during the 1st wk and on the 14th day of illness. The heart rate was calculated from an ECG taken each morning together with blood samples for the SGOT conduction disturbances were excluded. In anterior wall infarction, heart rate was significantly faster than in inferior wall infarction during the 1st 4 days of illness. However, in both subgroups of patients a significant rise of the heart rate on the 3rd day was noted. The possible mechanisms of the observed changes in the heart rate are discussed. The most convincing seems to be related to cardiac performance.
