The virtual bond-angle .delta. .**GRAPHIC**. seems to play an important role in the chain folding of protein molecules. The variation in .delta. was depicted in the form of constant value contours in the (.phi., .psi.)-plain for a pair of peptide units. The broad energy valley in the extended region of the (.phi., .psi.)-plane encompasses .delta. values in the range 85-145.degree., whereas the deeper valley in the .alpha.-helical region has a smaller .delta. range, 85-115.degree. It may be useful to consider these features, in the calculation of energy minimization using the simple concept of virtual bonds, in polypeptides and proteins.
