The Topical use of Fluocinolone Acetonide Cream for Relief of Vulvar and Perineal Pruritus

Gynecologists are more frequently confronted with the management of vulvar itching than with any other female complaint. This annoying symptom occurs as a result of monilial or trichomonad infestations or nonspecific vaginitis due to the Hemophilus vaginalis organism. The patient is concerned with rapid control of the itching and discharge, and has little interest in the problem of diagnosis or therapeutic regimen which may be required to obtain relief. However, even though an accurate diagnosis is made and adequate therapy instituted for the underlying cause of the vaginitis, the itching may persist for a long time. The multitude of drugs which are recommended and prescribed as panaceas for the treatment of each specific vaginitis and the various compounds which profess to treat more than one of the vaginal infections are too numerous to mention in this paper, the purpose of which is to describe a controlled study undertaken with fluocinolone acetonide cream, (Synalar Cream, Syntex Laboratories, Inc.) 0.025%, a highly effective topical corticosteroid compound for the rapid control of vulvar and perineal itching when used as an adjuvant to medicaments required for the treatment of the underlying vaginitis. In our experience, the use of fluocinolone acetonide provides a valuable adjuvant for the treatment of itching and irritation associated with vaginal infections. It provides patient comfort, rapidly and with safety.
