Acetylcholine (10-7 g/ml) relaxed the saphenous vein and the pulmonary artery but not the mesenteric vein; in all blood vessels tested it caused a significant, and reversible reduction in total 3H-efflux and in release of intact 3H-norepinephrine. Acetylcholine inhibits the release of adrenergic neurotransmitter caused by depolarization of the nerve endings in different blood vessel preparations. Part of the vasodilator properties of acetylcholine may be due to its action on the sympathetic nerve terminals. When considering pharmacological effects on K+-induced responses of adrenergically innervated blood vessels, an important part of these effects can be due to interference with the norepinephrine release evoked by K+.
