The importance of weight reduction can not be overemphasized. The overall success of the Roux-en-Y Bypass technique is resulting in greater acceptance of surgery as a treatment option for those that have failed conventional weight loss attempts. Currently, bariatric surgery offers the best treatment to produce sustained weight loss in morbidly obese patients and can be performed successfully and safely in Puerto Rico.
