1. The commoner methods of sterilising oils in use today are described in the light of the latest literature. 2. Oily solutions can be sterilised by heating in a drying oven fore one hour at a temperature of 150° C. 3. The temperature changes of the oils during heating, and the factors influencing the time necessary to obtain a given temperature, are described. 4. Some practical examples are given of the sterilisation of oily solutions by heat, in the light of the results obtained. 5. The behaviour of a number of vegetable and animal oils during heating was studied by determining the acid and peroxide values. The influence of the temperature on the one hand, and the duration of exposure to heat on the other, are discussed. 6. The acid and peroxide values for both natural and neutralised oils were determined immediately after heating and again after 2 months' storage. 7. Of the substances examined, arachis oil showed the least changes during sterilisation by heating. Olive oil, both pure and refined, came second in this respect. Horse's-foot oil underwent excessive changes, and can therefore not be sterilised by dry heat. Results also show that oils once sterilised should not be stored too long.
