Oligoaccharidase activities of the small intestine mucosal homogenates were measured in vertebrates, i.e. fish, toad, garden-lizard (Calotes), pigeon, rat and some invertebrates, i.e. mollusca. Maximum activities of the enzymes lactase, sucrase and maltase were found in mammals such as the rat; lower activities were found in the non-mammalian vertebrates among which the toad shows the highest values and the garden lizard the lowest. Among the invertebrates Pila globosa shows higher values of all the enzymes than Achatina fulica. The results obtained were discussed in light of phylogeny and diet habits.
