Streptonivicin: laboratory and clinical studies in the pediatric age group

Streptonivicin (Albamycin) is a new antibiotic produced by Streptomyces niveus, n.sp., an actinomycete isolated from soil collected in Queens Village, New York. It is a weak acid, very soluble in water and stable. It is reported I to be active in vitro and in vivo against Micrococcus aureus, Streptococcus hemolyticus, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella typhosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae infections. Acute and chronic toxicity in rats, mice, guinea pigs, and dogs is of a very low order, and the drug seems to warrant further study. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential usefulness of the drug in treating infections caused by M. aureus. To be useful, the new drug should have some advantage over or supplement the three most effective antibiotics for micrococci, namely, penicillin, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin. Our studies include these three for comparison.
