Management of kwashiorkor in its milieu--a follow-up for fifteen months

All children under 5 were examined in 20 villages and the 32 suffering from kwashiorkor were studied in detail and followed-up for 15 mo. The per capita income of these 32 families was 0.78 rupees per day. These children on the average, were taking 79.1 calories and 2.3 g of proteins per kg actual weight per day before they were submitted to the domiciliary nutritional rehabilitation. Their mothers were given nutrition education and the children were provided with nutrition supplements from locally available foods. It took an average of 8.1 wk for the edema to subside. There were no deaths, but 2 children had recurrence. Details on clinical progress, dietetic intake, operational methodology of nutrition rehabilitation, impact on the nutrition awareness of mothers and cost/benefit were discussed.
