Sanitary microbiological evaluation of new detergents

The effect of 95 detergents and their components on Shigella flexneri, S. sonnei, salmonellae, Escherichia, Bacillus spp., staphylococci, enterococci, Candida spp. and bacteriophage T1 varied with the concentration of the detergent, characteristics of the microorganisms and duration of the exposure to the detergent. Increases in bacterial resistance to the detergents were also studied. Tests using microorganisms resistant to phenol, chloramine and temperature and which have typical cultural and biochemical indices, are recommended for laboratory evaluation of the detergents.
