Blood coagulation and fibrinolysis were examined in 43 patients with acute leukemia before and during treatment. The patients were divided into 3 groups. Group I included 9 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Group II was comprised of 30 patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia and group III included 4 patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia. The most frequent disturbance in blood coagulation was thrombocytopenia (83.7%). In 30% of patients the elevation of fibrinogen and factor VIII was observed. Disseminated intravascular coagulation plays a predominant role in hemorrhagic diathesis of acute promyelocytic leukemia and is the most frequent cause of the plasma hemorrhagic diathesis in patients with acute leukemia. In patients who obtained hematologic remission the coagulation abnormalities disappeared. Hemorrhagic diathesis in patients with acute leukemia is a result of different abnormalities of coagulation.
